November 2009
Wednesday- Sunday Insect Lab will be here:

The Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show is presented annually by the Museum's Women's Committee and Craft Show Committee for the benefit of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Funds raised are used to purchase works of art and craft for the Philadelphia Museum of Art, to conserve and publish projects, and to support exhibitions and educational programs.
This is a great show, with many talented colleagues I'm happy to call friends!

OK, big news here I'm very happy about! Insect Lab has joined forces with Neiman Marcus to be part of it's annual Fantasy Gifts for its 2009 Christmas Book! From driveable cupcakes to recycled chandeliers, Insect Lab is 1 of 9 extravagant gifts in this year's catalogue. For this offering, I've designed a limited edition of 9 of the biggest, buggiest and most unique specimens I've ever worked on ever...ever (pic below). The presentation is appropriately upscaled too, with a custom lathe-turned, oil finished, walnut base (from my gifted furniture maker friend, Peter Turner), 10" glass domes and a handsome etched brass plaque. Big thanks to all involved, Amy Brotherton of Device Gallery and Ginger Reeder of Neiman Marcus!

Spineless Wonders: Invertebrates as Inspiration celebrates the diversity of species for the 2009 bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s birth and the 150th anniversary of On the Origin of Species. Paintings, prints, sculpture, poetry, video, sound, and work in clay, metal, fiber, glass, wood, and stone by over 50 artists from around the country will all be part of the multi-dimensional exhibition. A poetry chapbook will accompany the exhibit, featuring poets who express a passion and curiosity about the invertebrate world.
Opening at USM Lewiston-Auburn Atrium Gallery September 11, 2009
Show runs September 8- December 18, 2009
Big thanks to Robyn Holman, Curator, for putting this great show together!

"SPECIMEN" Exhibit at Rutgers opens Thurs Nov 6- Jan 29displays
T-Rex (from the Tanniyn series) Skeleton made from bible pages, wire, dark walnut, 12"x20"x28", 2008

I've been invited by curator Anonda Bell to participate in an exhibit she has coordinated at
Rutgers University in New Jersey. In addition to a few insect pieces, the sculpture pictured above (from a new series I'm developing) is also on display. There's a great roundup of international artists I have really grown to admire over the years, and a printed color catalog will be available.

This exhibition addresses the pervasive influence of ‘natural history’ inspired aesthetics and methodologies on contemporary art. The term ‘natural history’ was applied to studies made by a broad range of people in the 1800s and 1900s, from scientists and clergy to amateurs. This exhibition focuses on a time when a thirst for information and objects about nature was rampant among the public.

Contemporary works in this exhibition will be displayed alongside historic works, on loan from the Newark Public Library and private collections. Contemporary artists in the show: Damien Hirst, Catherine Chalmers, Dorothy Cross, Mike Libby, Julie Dermansky, Jordan Eagles, Seth Goodwin, Laura McClanahan, Christopher Russell, Laura Splan, Kimberly Witham, Dustin Yellin. Other historic works will be included from John James Audubon, Ernst Haeckel, Frederick Nodder, E. A. Seguy,Lorenz Oken, and J. Sturm

INSECT LAB IN CALIFORNIA

Opening this weekend! I'm pleased to announce a BIG show at Greg Brotherton's new exhibition space in San Diego, Device Gallery. The exhibit "Fantastic Contraption" is a ripe roundup of inspired artists who use the objects and imagery of machines and technology in their work. Folks like Stephane Halleux, HR Giger, Chris Conte, Eric Joyner and Ashley Wood, to name a few. Stop on in to check the work and say HI to Greg & Amy.

Synonymous with the exhibit, the folks at IDW publishing are releasing a
handsome book (below) featuring all the participating artists. Also, the Vandermeers (of New Weird fame) will be posting an article about the exhibit and artists on i09 soon. Stay tuned!

Bar Harbor Craft Show

Insect Lab is at another Arts and Crafts Fair! The Mount Desert Island Show is often referred to as the most outstanding and successful, long-running craft show in Maine. At the 33rd Annual Show, exhibitors will fill the newly renovated gymnasium and cafeteria at the Mount Desert Island high school, transforming the space into a gallery like setting of carefully designed individual displays. Stop by and say Hi. Info here.

TATTOO

Cheryl Ryan in LA got this Insect Lab inspired tattoo. She was kind enough to bear the pain and share the results. It's a mashup of 2 beetles, a Buprestidae and Rutelidae, and at 6" sits atop her shoulder. Very cool. Thanks Cheryl, Looks Good!

COVER ART
The right brain folks at Tachyon Publications have asked me to create a work for the cover of their upcoming collection of science fiction writings. Due to be released in February 2008, "The New Weird" is an anthology of some of the most talented and contemporary writers whose ideas go beyond "normal" science fiction writing. Will be available in some local stores here in Maine, but you can buy online here at Tachyon Publications, too. Thanks to Jacob Weisman, Ann Monn and Jeff Vandermeer!

CRAFTBOSTON AWARD
I'm happy to announce that the weekend at CraftBoston last month was a success and even more jazzed to announce that Insect Lab won the Artist's Choice Award. Which is basically a big ol' pat on the back from all my fellow craftspeople and vendors who stepped up and voted Insect Lab as their favorite work in the whole show. This is not an award from the judges but from people who really know how to make stuff and work hard at making a living at it, so the honor is appreciated all the more. Not only did I get a nice little certificate, but guaranteed entry into next year's show! Thanks to all who made it possible!

RETURN TO RISD
Once again, Insect Lab will be returning to RISD for it's annual Alumni Sale this Saturday, May 3rd at Benefit St. in Providence RI. This is a great outdoors sale with many dynamic and awesome crafts and objects made by a talented and diverse array of artists and designers. Rain or shine, it happens and be sure to stop in to booth #134 and say "hello".
