Artist's Bio

I'm a multi-disciplinary artist who makes highly detailed sculptures, models, collages and drawings. Through diverse materials and methodologies, I explore themes of science, nature, fantasy, history and autobiography; highlighting illogical and acute correspondences between the real and unreal. For the past 8 years, alongside my other body of work, I have enjoyed developing the work presented here as Insect Lab.

Libby Graduated with a degree in Sculpture from RISD in 1999 and has since attended the Vermont Studio Center, been artist-in-residence at the University of Maine at Orono. He has been in many solo and group exhibits, in throughout the US and Canada and is in collections worldwide. He has future shows at CraftBoston, The Peabody Museum, The Smithsonian Craft show in Washington DC and Device Gallery in San Diego. This year his work has been presented alongside Damien Hirst, Dorothy Cross and Carolyn Chambers at Rutgers University current "SPECIMEN" exhibit.

How did insect lab begin?
One day I found a dead intact beetle. I then located an old wristwatch, thinking of how the beetle also operated and looked like a little mechanical device and so decided to combine the two. After some time dissecting the beetle and outfitting it with watch parts and gears, I had a nice little sculpture.

Where do you get your insects?
I get safe non-endagered high quality specimens from all around the world; from Africa, China, New Guinea, Brazil, Texas etc. Though I do salvage insects that I find right at hand, the occassional bumblebee or dragonfly.

Where do you get the parts?
Mainly from antique pocketwatches and wristwatches- and I use almost every little part. I also use electrical components and other odd bits from sewing machines and typewriters

How are the insects displayed?
Either in shadow boxes or glass domes with a wooden base. Both are archival and are durable enough to ship long distances without damage.

What if there is not an insect on display that I would like to own? or What if I see an insect I like but want it customized differently?
Just ask!

How do I make purchase?
Paypal, check payments and money orders are accepted. INSECT LAB is not an online store and I prefer to have direct contact with people- so please email me at the address on the contact page and we will proceed from there.
